Experts agreed that it was only a matter of time before the mosquitoes carrying the zika virus found their way to the United States. And the most likely place for those mosquitoes to show up is Florida.
The CDC is currently investigating a case of the zika virus in Miami-Dade Country Florida that was not contracted outside the country and was not likely spread through sexual contact. This scenario is what the CDC has been concerned about and what local officials have been petitioning Washington for assistance with for months.
Up until this point; the only cases of zika in the United States originated from mosquitoes outside the country or were spread by someone who contracted the disease outside the US.
Initial reports show that this person did not travel outside the United States and was not likely in sexual contact with someone who had already contracted the virus.
As a result; health officials will be going door to door in Miami-Dade to test people for zika.
When asked about what you can do to protect yourself and your family from the zika virus; CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent had this to say:
“Cover up, make sure that you use insect repellant, try to stay indoors, use air conditioning.”
